3 Signs Your Car’s Brakes Need Repaired

May 27, 2016

How do you know if your brakes need repaired? The short answer is, when your car’s brakes are not functioning well, you will know. There are some common signs of failing brakes that shouldn’t be ignored. If you notice any of these signs, make an appointment at your local Rad Air auto repair shop immediately to have your brakes inspected and repaired. Your car cannot run safely without your brakes!

Your brakes are making a squealing or grinding noise.
If you hear a sound like this when you press down on your brakes, it likely means your brake pads have worn down. Once brake pads have become worn, a metal tab, known as a squealer, presses against the rotor. This is meant to be a warning that your brake pads need to be replaced. If you ignore this, you will eventually begin to hear a grinding sound—that is the brake pads’ metal backing pushing against the metal brake rotor. When your brake pads have become this worn, you risk being unable to stop at a high speed or completely losing all brake function.

Your brake pedal becomes easier—or harder—to press down.
You use your brake pedal so often, you may not pay it much attention. However, when it begins to feel differently, you will likely notice. If it seems like it is too easy or too hard to push, it could mean air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak caused by a loose or disconnected brake line.

Your car is pulling to one side when braking.
Your car pulling to the right or left could be caused by a worn suspension or, most common, brakes that are failing or malfunctioning. If you experience pulling when braking, make an appointment to have your brakes checked.

If you notice any of these signs, do not delay. Have your brakes inspected and repaired to keep you safe on the road. Also remember the importance of regular brake checks and maintenance. Think of this guideline for how regularly they should be checked: Your car’s brakes should be inspected every time you have your tires rotated.
