Have you ever been recommended an air filter change but weren’t sure what that even meant? What is an air filter and why do they need to be changed? How many air filters does my car have?
Most vehicles have two types of air filters: the cabin air filter and the engine intake air filter. Both are necessary for a vehicle to function properly and both need to be changed from time to time.
The cabin air filter purifies and removes particles and pollution from the air that enters the vehicle cockpit or cabin so it is safe and healthy to breathe. The engine intake air filter (or internal combustion air filter) purifies the air that enters your engine. These filters prevent debris, dust and dirt particles from contaminating the engine. Dirt and dust will accumulate on the intake valves, damage the piston rings and cylinder block; thus reducing performance causing premature engine failure. Purified air burns more quickly inside the engine which results in improved fuel economy and overall performance. You might be recommended an air filter change during a routine oil change. (We include a filter change in most of our Maintenance Packages!) If you’re not sure if you need one, ask to see your filter before it is changed or ask your mechanic to send pictures during the change.
Quality matters. Ask your repair shop what kind and brand of filter is being used. Some repair shops use inexpensive, cheap filters that may not meet the OEM specification for your vehicle and will do little to protect your engine.
