Summer heat is more than just uncomfortable when you get in a car, extreme temperatures are taxing on your vehicle as well. Newer vehicles can handle the extreme cold of winter and high heat of summer better than older vehicles, however, it is important to pay attention to some specific summer road hazards. Follow these tips for a trouble-free summer behind the wheel!
Pay attention to wear and tear on your vehicle if you frequently drive through construction zones. It is not uncommon to see flat tires and suspension issues in vehicles traveling in construction areas. If you cannot avoid these areas, take extra care to avoid potholes and debris in the road. If you think your wheels are out of alignment or you may have damage to your suspension, contact a trusted auto repair shop for a quick look. Pay attention to your tires. A slow leak from a punctured tire may leave you stranded unexpectedly. It is a good idea to keep a tire inflation kit, a spare tire, and the contact information of your repair shop handy in case this situation arises.
In addition to construction zones, extremely high temperatures will expand the air inside your tires, potentially causing them to be over-inflated and at risk for a blowout. When was the last time you had your battery and charging system checked? Under normal weather and driving behaviors, all batteries have to be replaced at some point. Most batteries last between three and six years. If it has been more than three years since your battery was checked or if you cannot remember the last time it was replaced, contact a repair shop to have it checked out. Extreme heat causes extra stress for your battery, so it is always a good idea to have the battery checked before heading out on a trip.
Just as you would take extra care to make sure you and your loved ones are well-hydrated while spending time outside, summer is a good time to make sure essential fluids like engine oil, brake, power-steering and windshield-washer fluids are at the proper levels. You can check the fluids yourself or visit a repair shop for a quick look. Low or leaking fluids may be a sign of a problem with your vehicle and should be addressed when you notice them.
