We all take for granted that moment when we put the key into the ignition and our car starts right up and gets us where we want to go. But many things must happen in order for our car to perform the way that we’d like it to on a daily basis. That is one of the most critical reasons to have the oil changed regularly by an auto repair shop.

The oil in your car’s engine serves an important purpose; it prevents areas where metal rubs against metal in your engine from heating up too much and doing damage. Oil reduces friction and prevents metal from seizing. Over time, dirt collects in the oil that circulates through the engine, making the oil more thick than it should be and, as your auto mechanic will tell you, dirty oil causes more wear and tear.

To prevent costly car repairs, most auto makers recommend changing your oil at least every 7,500 miles. That recommendation; however, is meant for “normal” usage. Unfortunately, what we think of as normal usage is actually considered to be heavy use. “Normal” use includes short trips and stop-and-go driving in traffic – all of which we experience regularly in the Northeastern Ohio area.

The best time to change your oil?

The answer to this question is based on several factors and can be discussed with any of the auto mechanics or managers at Rad Air to develop the best plan for you. The short answer is every 3,000 miles. When you take your car in for car care by having your oil changed on a regular basis, you will ensure that you are preventing expensive engine damage. When you do take your car in for service, the next question will be whether you want synthetic or regular oil. In general, synthetic oil can accommodate higher heats and longer use periods than conventional oil.

The downside is that synthetic oil can cost more. With changes in technology, synthetics are generally the better choice as they help engines to achieve the best performance and mileage; all which will help you to save on gas. There are also synthetic blends, which combine synthetic and conventional oil. While they can be less expensive, they will not last as long as the pure synthetic oil.

Overall, the most important thing to remember is that you must change you oil on a regular basis to give the best gas mileage and longevity to your vehicle. By changing the oil every 3,000 miles, you can be assured that your car will be ready to go when you are.
