As the weather begins to cool down, we start pulling out our coats, scarves, and mittens to keep warm. We may not remember, however, that as much as the cooler weather affects us, it also affects our cars. Snow, ice, frost, and cold temperatures can all cause issues to our vehicles if we aren’t mindful of ways to prevent damage.
One of the key ways to know when the weather is changing is when the tire pressure light flicks on in your car. Colder air contracts, causing tire pressure to drop, but then expands if tires get too hot due to friction from skidding on icy roads. Being mindful of your car’s tire pressure will help prevent uneven wear or flats as you move into the winter months that could require tire repairs.
Just like any other fluid, the liquids in your vehicle will thicken in the cold. This includes oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and yes, even antifreeze. The best way to prevent malfunctions due to thickened fluids to warm up your car before driving it on icy mornings and to change your fluids before the cold weather sets in.
The cold weather also affects the materials in your car. Metal, plastic, and glass can all shrink, warp, or break when introduced to cold weather.
