How to Drive Safely During April Showers

April 2, 2018

April showers bring, well, yeah, May flowers.  But they also bring headaches to Northeast Ohio drivers.  They usually hit before our road crews have had a chance to fix the potholes left behind by Cleveland’s harsh winters, and that can create chaos on the side streets and even the freeways.
Because we are used to snow, we automatically assume that we can handle driving in the rain, but the conditions are very different.  Just because you made it safely through the white stuff doesn’t mean you will get a free pass in the spring.

Here are some tips to help you get around Cleveland safely when the April showers hit:

    • Stay Alert and Pay Attention
Common sense isn’t so common, especially on wet roads.  You would assume that someone driving in slippery and hazardous conditions would slow down and heighten awareness, but it doesn’t always happen.  So if they aren’t going to pay attention, it’s up to you to be more vigilant.

    • Turn on Your Headlights
It’s easy to adhere to this simple rule: If your window wipers are on, your headlights should be, too.  It is a law in all states to have your headlights on when visibility is low, and that includes the rain.  If you don’t have automatic lights, remember to turn them on when it’s wet outside.

    • Hydroplaning is a Real Threat
Hydroplaning occurs when your tires are getting more traction on the water that is sitting on the surface of the road than the road itself. If you start to hydroplane gradually let off the accelerator and steer straight until you regain control.  Don’t panic and remain as calm as possible.

    • Don’t Cruise in the Rain
Turn off the cruise control on wet roads.  If you start to hydroplane and you are in cruise control, it can be easier to lose control of your vehicle.

  • Slow Your Roll
The speed limit signs are not perfect for all conditions.  They are set to keep you safe when conditions are ideal.  If conditions are not ideal, it only makes sense that you’d want to slow down a little to make sure that you get to your destination safely. Leave early and let the people you are meeting at your destination know that you are going to put your safety ahead of promptness.
