Every year, car enthusiasts wait with feverish anticipation to see what the latest and greatest trends in the industry will be, and for the last few years, the buzz has been on digital integration and electronic cars. In 2020, that will continue but with some amplification. The buzz around those subjects is getting louder and louder.
Rad Air has its own opinion on what will be hot in 2020, so we thought we’d share our bold predictions for the car industry in 2020!
To no one’s surprise, the electric vehicle market continues to grow and dominate the car trend headlines. This is largely because the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards are set to change in 2025, which sets a very high standard for where the manufacturers need to be in a short amount of time. The rollout is aggressive, and to stay on top, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have been rolling out concept after concept to keep pace with the competition. Tesla, Volkswagen, and BMW have all been at the forefront. In 2020, they all plan on rolling out new versions of their crossover vehicles, and even the VW microbus, to give drivers more choices than ever on the electric/hybrid market.
While we appreciate people wanting to do things on their own, watching a YouTube video doesn’t make anyone a car repair expert! There is serious training that goes into knowing how to repair vehicles. It can also be very dangerous to get under a car to make repairs without proper equipment, even for an oil change.
It would appear that the push to have driverless vehicles is taking a backseat to the continuing battle for clean emissions. We will eventually get to the autonomous vehicle, but fuel-efficient cars that don’t rely on traditional fossil fuels (hopefully) are where the main focus is.
With the integration of voice recognition technology, which makes things safer for the operator as well as the passenger, cars are getting smarter. In 2020, we’ll push the envelope further. BMW has announced technology that will allow updates to happen over the air, as we can do on our cell phones, which means the software will always be up to date. Bandwidth in vehicles is increasing as well, with manufacturers announcing vehicles with up to 4.5 terabytes of internal memory. 5G technology is also going to play a role in car development in 2020.
