If I see someone besides my dealer for an oil change, is it going to void my warranty?
It’s a question that comes up often in the oil change business.
The answer is, of course, no. As long as you keep the receipt and can prove that you’ve been keeping up with scheduled maintenance, you can feel free to go see whomever you would like to see to get an oil change. The caveat is that you have to make sure that you are going to a reputable shop because if they mess your car up, that is the only way your warranty could be nullified if you go to a third party.
So who should you go to? Here are 3 factors to take into consideration when looking for an oil change alternative to your dealership:
1. Do they service your type of vehicle?
You’ll find that some oil change shops in Cleveland aren’t going to be able to handle import car requests and especially European vehicles. Before you drop your vehicle off, make sure that they have a track record for working with your kind of vehicle. Ask around – if you have friends with a similar type of car, they’ll be able to send you to their favorite shop.
2. What kind of oil and filters are they using?
Quality matters and if the oil change shop you are visiting is using off-brand oils or filters, that is a huge red flag. You know the names you’re used to seeing, so don’t be afraid to ask for your oil by name. Also, ask to see the filter before they install it. If it is thin or flimsy, you should reconsider using this shop and find a place that uses quality parts.
3. What else are they going to charge you for?
There can be some hidden fees at some oil change shops in Cleveland. You want to make sure in advance that you know if they will be charging you for things like topping off fluids or inspecting hoses or belts. There are usually charges for things like tire rotations and extra services like vacuuming/wash services. So, see what is included and what isn’t before leaving your car in the hands of the staff at the shop.
